Datia is the District headquarter of the Datia District. The town is 69 Km from Gwalior, 325 Km south of new Delhi and 320 Km north of Bhopal. It is an ancient town, mentioned in the mahabharata as Daityavakra. The town is a market centre for food grains and cotton products. Handloom weaving is an important industry . Datia is a famed for the seven-storied palace built by Raja Bir Singh Deo in 1614. A pilgrimage spot for devotees, Datia has the sidhapeeth of shri peetambhara Devi, Buglamukhi Devi Temple and Gopeshwar temple. About 15 Km from Datia is the Sonagiri, a scared Jain hill. Datia lies on the track from Gwalior to Jhansi. In fact it is closer to Jhansi, which is in Uttar Pradesh, than to Gwalior. 26km to the north of Jhansi is the small palace town founded by the Bundela chief Raj Bir Singh Deo.
Bir Singh supported Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir) when he rebelled against his father, the Mughal Emperor Akbar (see Orchha for details). The palaces at Datia and Orchha are the best surviving examples of a style of architecture that arose in the late 16th and early 17th centuries in the Bundelkhand area under the reign of the Bundela Rajputs.

It was formerly the seat of the eponymous princely state in the British Raj. Datia is situated near Gwalior and on the border with Uttar Pradesh (U.P); the town of Jhansi in U.P. is only about 25 km away.

The old town is surrounded by a stone wall, enclosing handsome palaces and gardens; the 17th century palace of Bir Singh Deo is one of the finest examples of Hindu domestic architecture available in north India.

It has an average elevation of 302 metres (990 feet).The district is bounded by Bhind to the north, Gwalior to the west and Shivpuri to the south, and by Jhansi of Uttar Pradesh to the east. The district is part of Gwalior Division.

History of Datia

Datia had formerly been a state in the bundelkhand region.The ruling family were Rajputs of the Bundela clan; they descended from a younger son of a former raja of Orchha. The state was administered as part of the Bundelkhand agency of Central India. It lay in the extreme north-west of Bundelkhand, near Gwalior, and was surrounded on all sides by other princely states of Central India, except on the east where it bordered upon the United Provinces.

It was second highest in the rank of all the Bundela states after Orchha, with a 17-gun salute, and its Maharajas bore the hereditary title of Second of the Princes of Bundelkhand. The land area of the state was 2130 mi² its population in 1901 was 1759. It enjoyed an estimated revenue of £2,00,000. The state suffered from famine in 1896-97, and again to a lesser extent in 1899-1900.

After India's independence in 1947, the Maharaja of Datia acceded unto the dominion of India; it later merged with the union of India. Datia, together with the rest of the Bundelkhand agency, became part of the new state of Vindhya Pradesh in 1950. In 1956, Vindhya Pradesh state was merged with certain other areas to form the state of Madhya Pradesh within the Union of India.

In this temple the principal deity is Lord Chandraprabhu, eleven feet in height. Two other beautiful idols of Lord SheetalNath & Parsvnath are installed.There is a column of dignity ( Manstambh ) 43 feet in height and an attractive model of Samavsharan. The samavsharan of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu came here for seventeen times. Nang, Anang, Chintagati, Pooranchand, Ashoksen, Shridatta and many other saints achieved salvation from here. This is the unique place known as Laghu Sammed Shikhar covering the area of 132 acres of two hills.

Unao-Balaji Sun Temple :

People from very distant places flock to the Balaji Sun Temple on pilgrimage.
