Katni is conglomeration of culture from three different cultural states viz. Mahakausal, Bundelkhand, and Baghelkhand. There are three different stories which reveals why Katni is called Mudwara. Goddess Umariyapan Katni junction is having half circular Mode (turn) from wagon yard. So people call it “Mudwara” Another story is that there was a village call Modwar that has been given as a reward of bravery for cutting Mud (heads). A similar story is about the British government used to cut heads of Baggies and plunderer and hang them in squares to afraid people of doing crimes. Vijayraghavgarh is a fort made in around 1826 by Thakur Prayagdas, son of Maihar King - Bishan Singh. Vijayraghavgarh is about 35km. away from Katni City. Vijayraghavgarh fort is surrounded by a deep trench aroud it just like in Red fort of Delhi. Most of the fort is constructed using red sand-stone that is carried from near-by area. Fort is dedicated to lord Vijayraghav and has sita-temple, soldier barack, kitchen, toilet, samadhi etc. in it. Vijayraghav fort has evidenced famous revolt of 1857 which is turning point in Indian Freedom struggle. King Prayagdas took part in freedom struggle in 1857 and blocked the supply line of EastIndia company force (Jabalpur-Kolkata). But with the help of Rewa-King, British forces won the battle and Prayagdas was captured by police. He was produced in court and death punishment has been awarded to him. Prayagdas was hanged till death and his Samadhi(shrine) was made in Katni city. At present given shrine became victim of ignorance and turned into garbage dumping area. Some of the captured soldiers were sent to Jabalpur jail. While transfering them from Vijayraghavgarh to Jabalpur, some of the were hanged on the trees present on the both sides of National Highway number-7 at Sleemnabad town. Sleemnabad is about 30 kms away from Katni on Jabalpur road. |
